JOY BROBST

“Stop it, and give yourself a chance.” ~ Aaron T. Beck

MEET JOY:

Joy Brobst creates a safe, confidential and judgment-free environment for all those entering her office.  It’s hard to reach out for help, and she is honored to join individuals, couples, children and teenagers on their journey to heal.  With a genuine and evidence-based approach to therapy, Joy works with anxiety, depression, life transitions, grief and loss, and overcoming trauma and anger.  Joy is honored to have seen individuals learn to rewrite their life’s story.  She welcomes all into her office and helps individuals find their path of happiness and joy without being defined by their mental health diagnosis or trauma history.

Joy received advanced training in Ecosystemic Family Therapy enabling her to create the ideal atmosphere for each family member to be heard. She worked as a family-based therapist for several years at Philhaven and Wellspan serving the Harrisburg and Lancaster areas. She is not only focused on the family structure as a whole but also works with individuals, couples, and extended family members. Her areas of expertise include mood disorders, ADHD, depression, anxiety, autism spectrum disorders, issues with improving self-esteem and working through attachment and grief traumas.

  •      Regarding treatment modalities, Joy prefers utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness Therapy, and Structural Family Therapy when guiding her clients. Her main focus is to make clients feel safe and empowered to overcome any issues that might arise in their lives and help them find their best selves. Joy understands the importance of effective communication and takes the time to listen to identify areas in which positive changes can be made. Joy frequently incorporates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help children process trauma and learn healthy coping mechanisms.

Joy’s colleagues describe her as approachable, respectful, an empathetic listener, and empowering. In her down time she enjoys watching movies with complex characters which are a reminder that we all have struggles to overcome. She also enjoys reading a variety of books.  If I Had Your Face by Francis Cha is a novel that Joy found particularly interesting since it shows that some struggles an individual is enduring could be a result of wider community issues..

Growing up in a suburb of New York City Joy saw how trauma can not only impact the mental health of the individual and the family unit but also the greater community. Since then she has been passionate about learning new ways to work with individuals, families, and communities to support them in coping with their struggles and find strength within themselves and their community.

Joy finds being a therapist very fulfilling and feels accomplished when seeing the shift happen in families knowing that she gave them the tools and resources to continue bettering themselves. To offer the best treatment for her clients, Joy values life-long education and plans on always trying to upskill and improve herself to help guide whatever it is that brings someone to her door

Joy enjoys her time off baking in her kitchen. You can also often find her in nature - hiking, camping, and anything that gets her out exploring someplace new.  She is also fond of playing board games with her friends and family, Pandemic and Carcassonne being two favorites.
